“I don’t need anything, least of all to explain myself to you. Now, I’m taking you home. I suggest you pack some things and make yourself scarce for a while. I’ve called in a favour on your behalf.”

“Why?”

He shrugged. “Why don’t you count your blessings?”

I fumed out the window, grudgingly beholden to him as it sank in how much worse this could be.

“Look, you’re a smart girl,” he said into the mirror. “You don’t want to deal with charges, hire a lawyer, go through the courts … Trust me. Let your friends figure this out for themselves. But they’re eventually going to find out you’re not under arrest, which makes you look like a rat. Running an establishment like this isn’t a high felony or anything, so if they get any jail time, it won’t be much. They’ll notice you’re not with them once they get downtown.”

The horizon darkened around the cruiser, the rest of the ride along the 401 miserable and grey. Toronto had never looked as brutally ugly as it did right then.

He pulled over a few streets from mine to let me out and uncuff me so my whole condo building didn’t have to watch.

“How am I supposed to get my car?”

“You’ll have to go back later. There won’t be a guard.”

“When?”

“Shouldn’t be long. Wait for dusk.”

“Dusk … you’re a fucking poet.”
